Dates

Dates are a healthy alternative for sugar. They have a lot of nutritional value and health benefits. Therefore, dates are perfect to use to sweeten your recipes. Since they are dried fruits, the natural sugar is high in dates. Dates might not look healthy due to the sugar, but they are full of fiber and antioxidants1. Because of the fiber in the dates, it is perfect to control your blood sugar levels. To conclude, dates are perfect as a sweetener for healthier snacks.

Variations of these date balls

These Cacao hazelnut date balls are perfect to change to your desires. Some of my favorite combinations are:

  • Coconut balls; Remove the hazelnuts and roll the chocolate balls through shredded coconut.
  • Surprise balls; These are harder to make, but amazing. Instead of the hazelnuts, try to add in your favorite nut butter in the middle of the ball and close it again afterwards.
  • Raspberry balls; These are amazing! Instead of the hazelnuts, use freeze-dried raspberries through the chocolate dough and end by rolling them through raspberry powder. In this variation, you can also skip the cacao powder if you like.
  • Nut balls; you can use any type of nuts you like instead of the hazelnuts.

How to make

  1. Crush Hazelnuts

Start by shortly crushing the hazelnuts in a food processor to create small hazelnut pieces. If you use pieces, you can skip this step. Set them aside for later.

  2. Dates

Combine the Cacao powder and Medjool dates in the food processor and mix until a large ball forms with a sticky consistency.

  3. Hazelnut pieces

Mix in the hazelnut pieces with your hands and leave 1tbsp of the pieces aside for the covering of the balls.

  4. Roll

Create approximately 12 small balls of the dough and roll them through the left-over hazelnut pieces and/or cacao powder. They are ready to serve, enjoy! For optimal storage, store them in the fridge before you take them on your hike.
