What to know
What to expect of the Felsenpfad Gerolstein
The Felsenpfad hike is a beautiful hike to do, with multiple interesting stops along the route. The hike is 8 km long with an elevation gain of 300 m, it takes approximately 3 hours to complete. Thus, here are a couple of highlights on the hike, which you should make sure to walk to. These are:
- Buchenlochhรถhle; A small cave, that invites you to peek inside. You can go in the cave, but only around 5 meters far.
- Papenkaule; Volcanic crater from a long time ago. In the entire Vulkaneifel, you can find traces of volcanic stone. Also, keep an eye out during the hike for volcanic stone.
- Viewpoint over Gerolstein; Additionally, on the hike, there are multiple viewpoints available over Gerolstein. The top of Hustley and Munterley are the two most popular spots for a good view.
- Kasselburg; 12th century castle ruins. It is now an eagle and wolfpark, but as a vegan and animal lover, I can not recommend going to a place with locked up animals. The ruins are pretty to look at from a distance, but please do not support wildlife parks.
- Geoacker; Lastly, this location is a perfect example of the volcanic history of this area. You can see different layer of the earth with volcanic elements.
All in all, the hike takes you through beautiful forest, gives you amazing viewpoints and shows the volcanic history of this area. Read further to find out what to bring on this hike.
Recommendations to bring for the hike
For the Felsenpfad hike in Gerolstein there are a couple of things that I would recommend taking with you. So, here is a list of things we bring on a hike like this:
- Hiking shoes; It might be hard to find vegan hiking shoes. Surprisingly, the Lowa Innox collection is vegan. Find your Lowa innox hiking shoes here.
- Water bottle; Secondly, water is very important on a hike. Isolated water bottles are perfect to keep your water cold on hot days. So, here is a collection of isolated water bottles.
- Snacks; One of the most important things to bring on a hike is food. Food is perfect to regain energy. We love to bring fruits like an apple or banana and a good nut mix. We also make sure to bring high in sugar candy as an emergency sugar rush if someone feels unwell.
- First-aid kit; This is one of the things you might forget to take. A small first-aid kit is a must on a longer hike. Because an accident can always happen, and you want to be prepared.
- Hiking bag; In addition, a good bag is necessary on a longer hike. Find a backpack with good cushions in the back and a strap in the front. Also, do you have a camera? Then make sure that you can store your camera. I personally have a Wandrd Lite 11L backpack, which is perfect for my small height and to safely store my camera gear.
- Alltrails; Lastly, when you are hiking, you don’t want to get lost. That is why we always use Alltrails. You can easily see the hiking routes available and incline of the hike.
