Driving through the Dolomites with a camper

Exploring the mesmerizing beauty of the Dolomites with a camper is a dream come true for adventurers and nature enthusiasts. Most important, the Dolomites offer a breathtaking landscape characterized by rugged peaks, lush valleys, and charming villages. Embarking on a road trip through this natural wonderland promises an unforgettable experience that combines the freedom of the open road with the pure nature. But there are some things you need to know before driving here.

The main roads in the Dolomites are good to drive with a camper or car. Are you planning to go for the smaller roads? Then make sure to check them in advance. The roads can be curvy, steep, and small. Google Street View is your best friend to check if a road is wide enough for your camper and if there is a parking area that is big enough. Good to know is that for a lot of popular hiking areas, you need to go onto the smaller roads to access them.

As you might know, it is important to have good driving skills while driving a camper in the Dolomites. The steep mountain roads involve engine braking while going down instead of using the brakes the entire time. Also know that ascending traffic has priority over descending traffic, except if the ascending traffic is closer to a diversion point. But don’t let this scare you away from the amazing Dolomites.

Don’t have a camper yourself, but still want to make a road trip? Then check out the available rental campers here.

Toll road towards Rifugio Auronzo parking

The toll road leading to Rifugio Auronzo parking is a gateway to paradise. Winding through the heart of the Dolomites, this maintained route offers access to the treasures of the region. The toll serves as a contribution towards the preservation of this pristine environment. The price of the toll road is 45 euros for a camper and 30 euros for a car per day. After 7PM until midnight, it is free of charge to enter and go. This means if you arrive after 7PM with your camper, you will only pay for the next day. The car park for campers and cars has limited availability, therefore know that you can be rejected to enter if it is full. It might be useful to arrive before 7PM and wait in line to go up, we arrived 15 min before and the line was already long.

When you have managed the curvy and steep mountain road, you will find multiple parking spaces. One of these is specifically dedicated for overnight stays with a motorhome. Make sure to find a place and enjoy the views. Next, find out what you need to know about staying overnight.

Overnight parking at Rifugio Auronzo with your motorhome

Staying overnight at Rifugio Auronzo is a unique experience. Yes, the place is perfect to discover during the day with a car, but now you will be able to see the sunset, night sky, and sunrise on the mountain peaks. This is definitely an experience you won’t forget.

Tre cime parking for motorhomes

At the Rifugio there are a couple parking areas available. One of these parking areas is designated for motor homes. At that parking, you will be allowed to stay overnight. On the other parking areas, there is a sign that motorhomes are not allowed. Therefore, make sure to park on the designated place, otherwise some day motorhomes might be banned completely.

When you have the opportunity to sleep at this amazing place, there are three things that you should consider watching: sunset, stars, and sunrise. Now, find out where the best spots are near the parking lot.

Best sunset spot at Rifugio Auronzo

To watch the sunset from the camper parking spot, you might want to walk a little further on the meadows. Take the path away from the Rifugio and you will end up on a corner for the best sunset views nearby. Find the exact location on the map at the end of the article.

Watching the stars at night

This parking area will be pitch black during the night, which is perfect for stargazing. Do you have a skylight window in your camper? Then it is even better. You can stay inside and watch the stars, but make sure to switch off all your lights to see as much as possible. If not, it can be cold during the night, and therefore make sure to wear enough layers to keep you warm while watching the stars outside.

Best sunrise spot at Rifugio Auronzo

Lastly, after sleeping at this amazing parking place, you will want to wake up early and see the sunrise over the mountain peaks. The best place to view the sunrise is just in front of the Rifugio Auronzo. The sun will rise in the valley and give beautiful colors on the mountain peaks. If you want to go for a hike, then the Cadinini di Misurina viewpoint is a perfect sunrise location. The mountain peaks will light up during the sunrise. The parking at the Rifugio Auronzo is famous for the Tre Cime loop walk. If you are staying overnight, I advise taking your chance to wake up early and walk the very popular trail before it gets busy. This is the popular Tre Cime loop walk.
