Driving through the Dolomites with a camper
Exploring the mesmerizing beauty of the Dolomites with a camper is a dream come true for adventurers and nature enthusiasts. Most important, the Dolomites offer a breathtaking landscape characterized by rugged peaks, lush valleys, and charming villages. Embarking on a road trip through this natural wonderland promises an unforgettable experience that combines the freedom of the open road with the pure nature. But there are some things you need to know before driving here.
The main roads in the Dolomites are good to drive with a camper or car. Are you planning to go for the smaller roads? Then make sure to check them in advance. The roads can be curvy, steep, and small. Google Street View is your best friend to check if a road is wide enough for your camper and if there is a parking area that is big enough. Good to know is that for a lot of popular hiking areas, you need to go onto the smaller roads to access them.
As you might know, it is important to have good driving skills while driving a camper in the Dolomites. The steep mountain roads involve engine braking while going down instead of using the brakes the entire time. Also know that ascending traffic has priority over descending traffic, except if the ascending traffic is closer to a diversion point. But don’t let this scare you away from the amazing Dolomites.
Toll road towards Rifugio Auronzo parking
The toll road leading to Rifugio Auronzo parking is a gateway to paradise. Winding through the heart of the Dolomites, this maintained route offers access to the treasures of the region. The toll serves as a contribution towards the preservation of this pristine environment. The price of the toll road is 45 euros for a camper and 30 euros for a car per 12hours. The car park for campers and cars has limited availability, therefore know that you can be rejected to enter if it is full.
When you have managed the curvy and steep mountain road, you will find multiple parking spaces. One of these is specifically dedicated for overnight stays with a motorhome. Make sure to find a place and enjoy the views. Next, find out what you need to know about staying overnight.

When you have the opportunity to sleep at this amazing place, there are three things that you should consider watching: sunset, stars, and sunrise. Now, find out where the best spots are near the parking lot.
Best sunset spot at Rifugio Auronzo
To watch the sunset from the camper parking spot, you might want to walk a little further on the meadows. Take the path away from the Rifugio and you will end up on a corner for the best sunset views nearby. Find the exact location on the map at the end of the article.
Watching the stars at night
This parking area will be pitch black during the night, which is perfect for stargazing. Do you have a skylight window in your camper? Then it is even better. You can stay inside and watch the stars, but make sure to switch off all your lights to see as much as possible. If not, it can be cold during the night, and therefore make sure to wear enough layers to keep you warm while watching the stars outside.
