I highly recommended it to bring the ruins to life. We visited during the low season, while there was almost no one else. The mosaic displays are covered to protect them from the frost during low season, winter.

The History of Ruïnes d’Empúries

Greek colonists founded the city Empúries in 575BC, the name of the city also means trading place. You can find multiple remains of the trading place in the first part of the city. The also called the Necropolis part where you can find an ancient Greek statue of Aesclepius. Later, the Greek city was occupied by Romans in 218BC. You will find the Roman influences further on the hill. You can find an old bathing house, multiple layouts of houses with a courtyard, and you will notice the main roads in and out of the city. There is an amphitheater just outside the city walls.

The place is large, but they excavated only 20% of the ruins of the roman city. This means that the original city is much bigger. It is impressive to see all the remains and listen to the stories on the audio guide that really bring the place to life. Want to know more about the history? Then I recommend visiting this place and follow the audio tour through this city. The audio guide is so good, it feels like you are right there at that moment thousands of years ago.

Sleeping spot for the night

After visiting, during low season you can sleep directly on the parking lot of the city for free. From July to mid-September, they ask a fee for the parking area, which you can pay at the entrance. There is a nice beach nearby with beautiful colors during the sunset. If you walk along the beach away from the ancient city, you will end up at the parking lot of the Lidl for some groceries.
