What To Do In Óbidos, Is This Special Town Worth Visiting?

The medieval town Óbidos is definitely worth a visit. It is close to Lisbon and you can easily spend a day at the town. I will tell you about all things you can do in Óbidos, where to stay and where to park. Do not miss this beautiful town in Portugal during your road trip.

Best things to do in Óbidos

The medieval town of Óbidos is an amazing place to spend your day. There are multiple activities you can do in Óbidos. It is completely free to go inside the medieval town. You can read about all free and paid activities in Óbidos.

Free things to do in Óbidos

  • Wall walk; One of the biggest highlights in Óbidos is the wall walk. You can walk all around the medieval walls of the town. Make sure you wear proper shoes, because the stones and path are uneven. Be careful during or after the rain, because it can be slippery. To walk the complete round, it takes approximately 1 hour. When you enter the city after the gate on your left hand, you will find the stairs to go up the wall. Half way, you will have to go down again, but if you go left after the medieval market entrance you will find a small path that takes you back up to the wall.
  • Town stroll; The small medieval town is perfect to stroll around. You can visit the shops and wander around the old houses. It is lovely to see that most shops have an old local lady as owner.
  • Chocolate house; The chocolate house is a chocolate shop and café in one, but it also has big chocolate sculptures, which you can view for free. The café has beautiful chocolate bars and bonbons available, with vegan versions.
  • Igreja de São Tiago; This small church is not a typical one. There is a bookshop inside the church. It is unique and definitely worth a visit.
  • Medieval market; This market has different medieval events, and it can be fun to visit it with kids. All information and prices can be found here.
  • Taste Ginja de Óbidos; One of the adult things to do is try out the famous ginja de Óbidos. You will find multiple stands in the town where you can try it out, it is hard to miss them. Ginja de Óbidos is served in an edible chocolate cup. You can find vegan chocolate cups at the chocolate house.
  • Grab a bite or drink; The medieval town has a lot of small restaurants and cafés available to grab a bite or drink. There are a couple of restaurants available with vegan options. Check them out on HappyCow here.

How to visit

The easiest way to visit Óbidos is by car, but it is also available to visit it by train or bus. By car, it is a 1h and 15 minutes drive from Lisbon to Óbidos. You can take the bus from, Lisbon to Óbidos which takes 50 minutes and is approximately 6 euros. The last option is to come by train. There is a direct train connection between Lisbon and Óbidos, which takes 2 hours and costs approximately 10 euros. There are enough transport options available to visit Óbidos from Lisbon. Since it is simple to find a way to visit Óbidos, I definitely think Óbidos is worth a visit.

Where to park in Óbidos?

Óbidos is a small town, but there are plenty of parking options available to visit it by car. All parking areas close by are paid. The closest parking lot is this one. This paid parking is only available for cars. Just on the other side of the road is this large parking available.

There is one specific place available to park your camper. During the day it is free to park on the camper parking, and it is only 6euro to stay overnight. If you stay overnight, you can use the facilities as well. Otherwise, a small fee is asked for using the facilities. You can dump your grey+black water, and fill up with fresh water. There are no other facilities available. You can only pay in cash at the camping area and if you stay overnight, you will receive a small bag where you can put in the money in the morning.

Where to stay in Óbidos?

There are multiple locations available to stay in Óbidos. Here you can find all accommodations in Óbidos. Staying within the city walls is an amazing location. It is incredible to stay in one of the old houses itself. Casa Picva is one of those places where you can feel at home in one of the old houses. If you want to stay a little further away from the medieval center, then Laranjeira das Loiras is perfect for you. There is parking available and a shared swimming pool.

Another option is to drive towards the beach after your visit and stay in one of the accommodations near the beach. The coast is particularly popular for surfing, therefore this FreeSurfCamp accommodation is a perfect place next to the beach. Breakfast is included in your stay at FreeSurfCamp, and they have bicycles available for free.

There is a place available in every price range near Óbidos. Therefore, it is definitely worth visiting Óbidos.
