What to know about the Caminito del Rey
Information before the hike Caminito del Rey
Caminito del Rey is a tourist attraction in Southern Spain, but it is worth to visit. Normally we do not enjoy the very touristic walks, because of the crowded paths, but the caminito del rey is definitely worth it. Before 2015 this was the most dangerous hike in Spain, they renovated en reopened the place in 2015. When we walk over the renovated pathway, you can still see the old broken path underneath. It takes you through a canyon and gives you stunning views.
Ticket information
It is good to know that the pathway is only accessible with a paid ticket. This ticket is 10 euro for an adult without guided tour, and it is advised to order your ticket online. They can scan the online ticket from your phone, so there is no need to print it. There are some limitation on this walk: Children under 8 years are not allowed, dogs are not allowed and umbrellas/selfie sticks are strictly forbidden.
Accessibility Caminito del Rey
Another good thing to know is that currently you can only walk the pathway in one direction; north to south. You can park your car/camper on the north access car park or, like us, just on the side of the road. It gets very busy, so parking a camper is harder later in the day, come early or otherwise be prepared to come back the next day. After parking your car, there is an unexpected 30-minute walk towards the entrance of the walkway. So in case you ordered tickets in advance, make sure to be there on time. To return after the hike, you can take a shuttle bus that takes you back to the north entrance car park for 1.55 euros cash per person.

The Thrilling One of a Kind hike
Before you start, you will get a helmet to wear on the trail. Due to COVID-19, a facemask is mandatory as well. There are multiple spots where you can disinfect your hands. Completing the walk takes approximately 2-3hours. You will walk next to the mountain and vultures will fly above the canyon. Even though I am afraid of heights, this renovated pathway felt safe enough. From where you are walking, the canyon goes both up and down for many meters. You will feel very small compared to the rough nature around you. After the canyon, you will come to a more open part which gives beautiful views of the area. You can see old broken houses, that were once part of an old village. On the other side of the river, you can see the train track going through the mountains. This train track is still in use for journeys.
During the caminito del rey you will go through a small tunnel, walk besides the cliff in the canyon and in the end walk over a swing bridge. It is beautiful to walk through this huge canyon and experiences to walk next to the cliff wall. This walk might be less attractive due to lots of tourists and the price, but it is absolutely an experience you will hardly find anywhere else. We found it amazing and incredible to see the nature and this unique pathway. If you want to stay overnight in your camper nearby, this place is perfect. The โentranceโ road is a little rough, but the area is big and in the middle of nature.
