This Sweden Supermarket Guide will give you an overview of what you can expect to find while traveling to Sweden. I will also include helpful tips to save money on your groceries. This guide was made in June 2022, some prices might have changed over time.

Supermarkets in Sweden

There are different supermarkets in Sweden, you will find ICA, COOP, Hemköp, Lidl, and Willy:s. ICA and Coop are the two biggest chains in Sweden. Coop is the supermarket with more bioproducts and can be priced higher than ICA. Because this guide will also help you to save money, I will discuss the products and prices of the lower price range supermarkets. These include Lidl and Willy:s. The ICA Maxi is also a lower priced store, and those prices can be compared to Willy:s.

Product range

The Swedish Supermarkets have a big product range. You will probably find everything you need. They have a big range of Mexican products, but also Asian products are very popular. You will find vegan products; like vegan cheese, vegan meat, vegan snacks and vegan milk. The cheese and meat alternatives can mostly be found in the cooling section of the store. There is also a big vegan section in the freezer with vegan meat, but you will also find vegan pizza and ice cream there. The bread selection is huge, and they have lots of options for spreads. You will definitely be able to find the products you need at a Willy:s, Lidl or ICA Maxi. Smaller stores might have less in their product range, but you can still find an equivalent for what you want.

Prices Sweden Supermarket

The first thing I always hear about Sweden is how expensive it is. To prepare you, I have collected some prices and footage where you can see them yourself. To start off with, we do not think your daily groceries have to be more expensive in Sweden. Although the products that are definitely more expensive are fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, alcohol and care products.

I have some tips to save on fruits and vegetables in the next part. Some examples of fresh vegetables: 1 kg paprika 49.90SEK, Cucumber 11.90SEK, snack tomatoes 500gr 38.90SEK, 1 kg tomatoes loose 14.90SEK, Broccoli 500gr 14.90SEK. If you decide to take freezer vegetables, you will find cheaper options. Some examples of freezer vegetables are: Broccoli 1 kg 17.90SEK, Cauliflower 500gr 14.90SEK, wok mix 1 kg 15.90SEK and green beans 1 kg 14.50SEK.

Other basic products are not that expensive. You can find a can of sweet corn 7.90SEK, or Kidney beans 8.90SEK, Chickpeas 8.90SEK, Knäckebröd 520gr 12.50SEK, Oat milk 16.50SEK, but also Tortillas 11.90SEK, Noodles 13.00SEK, Tomato pieces 7,90SEK and 1.5 kg oatmeal 14.90SEK.

As you can see in the pictures and prices above, there might be a slight price increase in basic products. Although, you will probably only notice the effect of the fruits and vegetables on your receipt. Make sure to read further for some tips to save money.

Tips to save money on groceries in Sweden Supermarket

Here are some tips to save money on your grocery bill in Sweden Supermarkets.

  • Find the big supermarkets; With Willy:s or ICA it is important to check if it is a bigger supermarket. Willy:s Hemma and ICA Nära are the smaller versions of the bigger stores and have therefore higher prices than the bigger stores.
  • Lidl app; Most supermarkets have their own savings program. The Lidl app is available for everyone. It is the same app as in other countries, simply change the country in the settings. It is quick and easy to change, and you will find personal coupons and savings programs in the app.
  • Bring re-usable bags for produce; In Sweden, they charge for a plastic bag to put your fruit or vegetables in. It is therefore cheaper to have your own reusable bags with you, and it is better for the environment. Find your re-usable bags here.
  • Choose frozen vegetables or fruits; Are you going to use your veggies inside a sauce or stir-fry? Then I definitely recommend skipping the fresh, more expensive vegetables and go for the freezer vegetables. Using the fruits for your smoothie? Buy the frozen fruits.
  • Wise card; Need to convert to another currency ? Then make sure to have a low exchange fee. Because banking companies let you pay 2-3% extra when you pay with your credit card in another currency. The wise card has a variable rate, which is currently 0.5%. Since basically everyone in Sweden pays with their phone, it is possible to have a Wise card on your phone after you ordered a physical card. Pay with the digital card directly before the physical even arrives. Start saving money today → Check out Wise here* .

OVERAL zit suiker in. Zelfs in ingemaakte zure haring zit 30% suiker.
Dus bij alle voorverpakte prudukten goed lezen wat er in zit. Soms zijn er bij meerdere soorten van een produkt grote verschillen.
